Good Places to Eat, Snack and Just Plain Chow Down
Yes, we have a fully-stocked kitchen and we know you brought all those coolers with you, but sometimes there's nothing like having someone else fry the fish and wash the dishes afterward! While Black Lake can feel remote from the pace of city life, you have some great options if you just don't feel like cooking tonight.
Echoes on the Lake in Edwardsville. At just 5 minutes away, Echoes is your source for anything you forgot (sunscreen, bug spray) or anything you want (milk, eggs, burger, S'Mores fixin's and fishing worms - the camper's grocery list). It's much, much more than a gas station/convenience store. To top it off, they also make great pizza and subs - order ahead or wander the store while they make it for you. They do have tables, but we always take it with us. Their card is on the fridge if you want to order ahead. We always stop there on our way to camp if it's late in the day and we don't feel like making supper!
Turn'er Inn in Edwardsville. Another local institution, the Turn'er Inn is a half-mile up the hill behind Echoes (coming from the Bungalow, drive straight through the Edwardsville light instead of turning right). The Turner family owned Bigge Island, the one you can see across the lake from Fish Creek, in the 1920s. Can you say Friday night fish fry? Appetizers, salads, burgers, chicken and seafood ... they serve lunch, dinner and drinks. Portions are generous. Depending on the season, there may be quite a crowd, so plan ahead. It's worth the wait!
Mack's Inn. Directly across the street from Echoes, fronting on the lake, is Mack's Inn. It's easy to drive past, since it looks like a house. Mack's is newly remodeled, with a crisp, clean decor, and is terrific for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You'll also have a beautiful view of the lake from its bar.
The Lake House. If you drive past Echoes, your next stop is the Lake House. Cozy and casual, with a small bar, and live music, the Lake House has burgers, fried fish, and hardier fair, like steak and shrimp scampi.
The Fish Bone Cafe. We love the Fish Bone for its location by the lake and its large, screened dining area — but mostly for its inventive menu. Who doesn't want a side of fish balls with their mac & cheese?
If you're thinking of venturing further afield, some of our faves are: the Freight House Restaurant and Buster's Sports Bar (both in Ogdensburg). For finer dining, consider these landmarks: Ella's On The Bay (Morristown), Riley's By The River (Alexandria Bay), and The Chateau (Clayton).
